Deadbeat Darling

New York four-piece Deadbeat Darling is spending time on both sides of the pond.  After selling out some of NYC's most prestigious venues over the course of the last 3 years, the band was signed by UK label Spearhavoc Records in March 2011, and promptly whisked away from Brooklyn to record in Wales with Grammy award winning producer Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy).  The album, titled "THE ANGEL'S SHARE", was mixed by another Grammy award winner, Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters), and is due out in early 2012. With a bit of downtown swagger and post-indie charm, their sound weaves together rock with hints of surf and dub. A native of neither extreme, their lifestyle toggles between Brooklyn dive bars and the mise en scene of the West Side's fashion district; their live show is a sweaty barrage of unrestrained energy and mischievous sway that leaves little doubt as to why Deadbeat Darling has garnered such a rabid and eclectic following...

Deadbeat Darling Named one of the 28 Best Bands of CMJ 2010 by BlackBook

"…we learn early on opener Promises that DD are all about melody first closely followed by some good old time melodrama, King's slightly ragged but big room vocals taking histrionic command from the first bar…. but as if to counter that the following Surf India is less polished and almost frenetic, loaded with some muscular garage fringes and sleek harmonies. The melodrama bit duly arrives on 'Flowers For Our Graves', a reverb soaked, countrified ballad on which no emotion is left not turned up to 11, subtlety at this point being another band's problem. After that slightly cloying sense of sentimentality a change of emphasis is required, one which duly arrives on 'Peculiar Grace', it's dub-tinged chops somehow providing a clue to what might happen if Matt Bellamy got over himself for once just long enough to replace the Queen DNA from his band's output and replace it with some from Lee “Scratch” Perry. In other words, it's pretty intriguing…. Deadbeat Darling are suitably poised to re-engage disenfranchised indie kids from Shoreditch to Sacramento." - Rich Pickings, ALTSOUNDS

"There is a wisdom and maturity to the band, and their new album has a kind of attention that leaves no song unfinished, and no weak spots to be found...this is the most unique accomplishment, and tells of a band who have found THEIR sound." - Richard Zimmermann, The London Music Blog

"Deadbeat Darling's music pulsates and breathes. It's electronic rock that brings to mind bands like The Killers and The Strokes." – Hector Saldana, SA Express

"Deadbeat Darling's "Weight of Wandering” mesmerizes listeners with gentle reggae waves, sprinkles of exotic modulation, a dab of Dub, and tinges of electronica... Fusing an enchanting instrumentation with (Joseph) King’s soaring, soothing, and shining vocals that attend to every nuance and touch every emotion, the Brooklyn quartet creates a “zen-rock” experience on their ten-track album.... “Weight of Wandering” is heavy with poeticism that is matched by substantial musicality." – Meijin Bruttomesso, Deli NYC

"(Joseph's) newest, New York-based project, Deadbeat Darling, takes a more mesmeric tack, emphasizing the negative space rhythms of dub and reggae while allowing the slinky electronic pulses King—an avowed trip-hop fan—has always favored to dictate the mood rather than merely enhance it." - Adam Macchia, AV Club New York

"The move to NYC has been good for the cosmically talented Joseph King.  With Deadbeat Darling, he's been able to stretch out and fully embrace his muse wit hthese songs about the slippery slopes of relationships, drugs, and bliss." - Loris Lowe, KGSR Austin

Deadbeat Darling named #2 on StyleCaster.com's Top 10 Indie Bands on the Rise

"Reminiscent of the power and energy of bands like the Police and U2, Deadbeat Darling boasts a strong front man with excellent vocals and a unique vibe." – Jify Shah, StyleCaster.com

Late summer morning 2005, i woke up in Austin to the familiar smell of amphetamine smoke billowing from the garage. The half-sane chatter of children awake for days bouncing off concrete and wine-stained carpet, echoing the tired intentions we’d left scattered across a West Texas desert long ago, and i knew it was time to make my break. Never quite the saint myself, i packed a bag full of half-burnt candles and a beat up black guitar, then quietly slipped out the back door with the girl with hope in her green eyes. The next time i awoke, i was in New York City...

In early 2007 Deadbeat Darling began playing club shows throughout New York City, and by Summer 2007 they had hooked up with producer Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead) to record their debut EP "belle epoch." The October release led to sold out shows at Lower East Side clubs and support slots at venues such as the Bowery Ballroom and Highline Ballroom with bands like Ambulance LTD and VAST.  By mid-Spring Deadbeat Darling was back in the studio to begin working on their first full-length album.

"Weight of Wandering," was recorded in numerous and bizarre locations over the course of eight months; the album was quite a guerrilla-style project. "Weight of Wandering" was mixed by Lars Goransson in Austin, mastered by Fred Kevorkian in New York City, and released into the world in June of 2009. Deadbeat Darling celebrated the release of the 10-track album with a sold out show at The Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and followed the release with tours of the Southwest, Midwest, West Coast, and a debut trip to the UK.

In March 2011 Deadbeat Darling became the flagship band of London’s Spearhavoc Records.  They left the well-worn paths of New York City for the distant Welsh countryside to spend two magical months with producer Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Gomez, Charlatans) at Monnow Valley Studio.  29 bottles of Jameson and 36 days later they finished the tracking of their second full-length album.  They returned to the States for their "Dead of Summer" tour and wove their way through the Midwest, Southwest, and Southeast before making it back home.

“Promises,” the first single of the forthcoming album, will be released on November 21st, 2011, followed by the album release in early 2012.
